Tourism

Tour boat off KilcredaunWest Clare has a rich diversity of wildlife habitats and populations. The Loop Head peninsula is teaming with seabirds (kittiwakes, guillemots, fulmars), Poulnasherry Bay is a protected site for its breeding waders and wintering wildfowl and agriculture is relatively under-intensive, with extensive wetland areas and bogs. However the dolphins are one of the unique attractions in the area and can act as a flagship with which to attract people interested in wildlife and outdoor activities to West Clare.

The Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation is committed to developing sustainable tourism which ultimately benefits the dolphins and their habitat as well as bringing economic benefit to the region. SDWF were partners in the development of a model for marine ecotourism in West Clare called IRRUS.
