Basking shark and minke whale were observed off Loop Head

A basking shark and minke whale were observed off Loop Head.

Fantastic views of a small (5-6m) basking shark feeding under the cliffs near the Lighthouse car park were had this morning (Saturday 26 May).

During the same watch a minke whale was observed feeding further offshore under a cloud of mank shearwaters.

Basking sharks have been reported along the south and east coasts in recent weeks and now have turned up off Loop Head.

Minke whales are frequently observed off Loop Head during the autumn but les frequently at other times of the year.

The weather is turning stormy again so views of these species are likely to be very difficult in the next week.
