SDWF on RTEs "The Estuary"

The work of the SDWF will feature on RTE 1 on 11 May at 19:30 as part of the programme "The Estuary: Secret of the Shannon"

Filmed in August and September 2006, the programme is the third in a series. The Estuary follows a series on the Harbour (Cork Harbour) and the Bay (Dublin Bay).

Dr Simon Berrow Project Leader of the SDWF and PhD student Joanne O'Brien of the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) discuss the use of acoustics for studying and monitoring bottlenose dolphins in the estuary.

Monitoring equipment stored in a cow shed near Carrigaholt is filmed. Here an 800m cable brings a signal acquired by a hydrophone in the estuary off Kilcredaun Point to a PC stored in the cow shed. A software programme enables the hydrophone to record 30 minutes of sounds from the estuary every hour and store to an external hard drive. These data are then examined for evidence of dolphin vocalisations (echolocation clicks or whistles).

This system was established under the Soundwaves project funded by Vodafone.
