New dolphin tour boat operator in the estuary

A new dolphin tour boat operator has been given permission from the National Parks and Wildlife Service to carrying out dolphin watching in the Shannon estuary SAC for the 2005 season. This is the first new operatror since the estuary was designated an SAC in 2000. The new operator, Michael Fennell, intends offering trips from Kilbaha in the outer estuary.

Under SAC legislation dolphin-watching is a notifiable activity and operators must obtain permission from the Minister of Environment to operate in the Shannon estuary.

Since 2000 four operators were given permission from 2000-2003 and three in 2004. This is the first year a new operator has applied and an application from at least one more is being considered.
